Rainy Day Suspense - Not A Sound, Book Review

July 24, 2017

This weekend I participated in the 24 in 48 readathon. The goal of this readathon is to try and read for 24 hours of the 48 hour weekend, you don't have to do it in one big chunk and it's more about setting time to read than it is about reading for 24 hours. I managed to complete 12 hours, but most excitingly, I managed to start and finish a whole book (I read chunks of other books too). The book I finished was Not A Sound by Heather Gudenkauf. Which was the perfect book for a rainy Sunday.

Not A Sound is a thriller that follows Amelia Winn, a nurse that was left deaf by an accident and has kind of hit rock bottom. One morning while she is paddle boarding with her service dog, she stumbles upon the body of a nurse that she knew. She ends up being swept up by the investigation and starts doing some digging on her own. What she uncovers puts her in danger.

As suspenseful thriller books go, this one does a good job of picking your interest without getting too scary or gruesome.  It's not a cozy mystery, but it's also not a book that will keep you up at night. The story is well developed and it does keep you guessing. I thought the main character, Amelia, was a unique heroine, she was underestimated a lot of the time, but she was strong and kept going.

One thing I did have issues with was the fact that some of the characters backstories hint at more, and you may think that it will connect some way, but it's just presented and not really explored. For example, early on you learn of Amelia's accident, which was not an accident, but done on purpose and the person was never caught. There is even a point where she thinks it might be connected to this new crime, but that theory is abandoned and by the end it's mostly out of the characters mind.

Overall, I would say this is a good book to read on any stormy day or beach day. Perfect all weather book. It's interesting, it does hook you, and you will root for Amelia.
